Easter Treat Ideas for the Mindful Mama

How the pagan fertility symbol of eggs got mixed up with the birth of Jesus is still kind of mysterious to me. The whole ritual of easter bunnies, eggs (which come from chickens not rabbits) candy and presents seems a bit strange in todays world. Don’t get me wrong, when I was a kid I was stoked to get an easter basket on Sunday morning and have chocolate for breakfast, but now that I’m older and more informed, I am reluctant to give my own child a taste of these not so savory sweets. What is aloud to be marketed and sold in our country under the guise of  food has taken a turn for the worst in recent years.

Processed white sugar, corn syrup and even brown rice syrup can cause radical spikes in blood sugar and can lead to head aches, irritability, inability to focus, light headedness, mood swings and even nausea. Common GMO ingredients that contain canola, corn and soy can affects the body’s natural balance of good and bad bacteria in the digestive tract making those who consume them more prone to illness. Eating GMO foods basically cause our bodies to attack these substances in the like a foreign invader as they are not recognizable as food. The body reacts as if they are toxins (because they are) which over time can lead to auto immune illnesses, leaky gut syndrome, irritable bowel and increased allergies and food sensitivities.

Fortunately more and more people are coming to understand that artificial colors, dyes and flavors don’t belong in our food! And that it’s best to stick to ingredients you can pronounce. The single most important thinning that affects our health and well being is what we put in our bodies.

So that being said here is an example of a healthy treat you can serve if you choose to celebrate Easter this year. You can also feel good knowing you and your family are not creating lots of extra trash from candy wrappers. These single use plastic packaging end up in our soil, creeks and oceans for decades after the candy is devoured in just a few seconds. Lets do our part to celebrate in a way that does the least harm to ourselves, our planet and animals.

A simple sweet treat that is easy to make and has so many possibilities are date “eggs”, made with date paste, shredded coconut and cocoa powder. Fresh berries are also a great, colorful option to serve rather then candy. You can even peel kiwi fruit and paint them with cashew cream.
